About Our Department

The Department of Botany was founded in 1906 as the first Department in the subject with an aim to impart teaching and research in plant science in the state of Odisha. With more than 100 years of Botany teaching, the Department not only excelled in the field of education but also in various fields of Plant Science Research. Presently, the Department is offering UG (Botany), PG (Botany and Biotechnology), and Doctoral (Botany and Biotechnology) programs. The Department is supported by DST-FIST (2nd term) and engaged in research activities in the field of Plant Biotechnology and Tissue Culture, Ecotoxicology, Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, Photosynthesis, Stress Biology, Ethnobotany, and Microbiology supported by various funding agencies such as UGC, DBT, DST, ISRO, CSIR and ANRF. At present, the Department is a part of ‘Center of Excellence in Environment and Public Health’ funded by World Bank Project of Government of Odisha under OHEPEE for carrying out cutting edge research in the field.
